Instrument picture

The Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer (SMPS; TSI Model 3034) provides total particle number size distributions in the diameter range of 10 to 487 nm by separating particles based on their electrical mobility. Particles of a selected size are detected optically; small particle visibility is enhanced by the growth of the particles in a condensing butanol vapor. Particle counting, to determine particle concentration, is performed by passing separated particles through a focused laser light source, where scattered light is detected using a photo-detector. The entire system is automated, with a sheath-to-aerosol flow ratio of 4:1 liters per minute. The time resolution of the measurement is 5 minutes.
